Sixth Form Debate Team’s Success at Cambridge Union
The Sixth Form Debate Team recently embarked on a remarkable journey to the prestigious Cambridge Union, where they showcased their eloquence and wit in a spirited competition last Saturday.
Joe Thompson, the captain of the Debating Society, expressed his excitement and satisfaction with the team’s performance at Cambridge Union. He remarked, “Debating at the Cambridge Union was a great experience for everyone involved. Getting the opportunity to compete at one of the world’s greatest debating venues was incredible, and everyone rose to the occasion, with each of our teams gaining a first-place finish across the four debates.”
One notable highlight was the impressive debut of the Lower Sixth members, who put on an outstanding first-time performance, contributing significantly to the team’s success. Joe Thompson emphasised the pride he felt in their achievements and the overall growth of the team. He added, “We learned some valuable lessons and are feeling confident for our future competitions.”
However, the journey was not without its challenges, as reflected in the thoughts of David, another member of the debating team. While the team did not secure a spot in the final, they returned with a wealth of experiences and a renewed perspective on the art of debating. David O. shared his reflections on the competition, stating, “On Saturday, 8 of us went to the Cambridge debating competition, and while we didn’t go through to the final, we all won at least one round.”
The intensity of the competition provided a unique opportunity for the team to hone their skills and gain valuable experience that will be pivotal in their future debating careers. David O. acknowledged the significance of the lessons learned, saying, “This tournament allowed us to gain valuable experience that will be vital to our future debating careers and any future competitions.”
Undeterred by the challenges faced at Cambridge, the team is now setting their sights on the next adventure – the Oxford Union regional round on Monday. With the lessons learned and experiences gained, they approach the upcoming competition with confidence and determination to continue their success.
The team’s achievements at Cambridge serve as a testament to their dedication and passion for the art of persuasion, and their journey is far from over as they eagerly anticipate the challenges and victories that lie ahead at the Oxford Union regional round. Good Luck!
