Academic Excellence At The Heart Of Everything We Do

Our students achieve outstanding A Level results year on year. We award a high proportion of A* to B grades, and a strong share of A* to A grades, placing our students among the most successful in the region. Furthermore, students go on to study at Russell Group and top ten universities, and several secure prestigious apprenticeships with organisations including Amazon, PwC, and Transport for London.

We achieve these results through small class sizes, specialist subject teaching, and a rigorous monitoring system. Student progress is tracked through GCSE data, ALIS testing, and regular target setting. Tutors and subject leaders work closely together, so any student who needs additional support receives it promptly and effectively.

A Rich And Varied Curriculum

Our Sixth Form offers a broad range of A Level subjects, so students build a programme that suits their strengths and their ambitions. The choice spans the sciences, mathematics, humanities, modern foreign languages, arts, and social sciences. All subjects are taught by specialists who know their students well and challenge them appropriately.

From September 2025, we also offer the Additional Assessment Qualification (AAQ) in Business and Sports, developed by Cambridge Assessment. These modular, coursework-rich qualifications sit alongside A Levels and open doors to both university and employment pathways. Read more about our Sixth Form curriculum.

Life Beyond The Classroom

Academic achievement is only part of the story at St Columba’s. We believe that education must develop the whole person, and so our Sixth Form students benefit from a structured Enrichment Programme alongside their A Level studies. This includes the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), Young Enterprise, Religious Education, a Certificate in Financial Services, and a full Games programme.

Students also enjoy supervised study periods, which develop the independent working habits that universities and employers value so highly. In addition, we offer a rich co-curricular life, with leadership opportunities woven throughout the Sixth Form experience. Our students graduate as accomplished, resilient, and kind young adults, precisely as we intend.

Pastoral Care That Makes A Real Difference

We take pastoral care seriously at St Columba’s. The Good Schools Guide describes our provision as exemplary, and we believe that happy students are successful students. Each young person is supported by a dedicated tutor who knows them as an individual. Our House System creates a strong sense of belonging, and older students often serve as mentors and role models within the wider college community.

Students who join our Sixth Form near Tring find a warm and nurturing environment that encourages them to take on new challenges with confidence. We never allow a student to struggle alone. So if a student faces difficulty, whether academic, personal, or social, we respond quickly and with care.

Destinations And Pathways That Inspire

Our leavers go on to do remarkable things. A significant proportion of those applying for American universities receive a scholarship or bursary, and we maintain strong links with top institutions across the United Kingdom and internationally. We also celebrate those who pursue degree apprenticeships and professional training programmes, recognising that success takes many different forms.

Our dedicated careers education programme supports every student throughout their time with us. We provide university application guidance, interview preparation, personal statement coaching, and employer engagement, so that each student leaves St Columba’s with clarity and confidence about the next step.
