Sixth Form Curriculum Overview

Curriculum

At St Columba’s College, our Sixth Form offers a rich, personalised academic experience where every student is supported to reach their full potential.

From the start of their journey, students receive expert guidance to help them choose the A Level subjects best suited to their strengths, interests, and future ambitions.

Monitoring Progress and Academic Support

Student progress is closely monitored through a range of indicators, including:

  • GCSE results
  • A Level Information System (ALIS) testing
  • Target grades and performance tracking

Regular meetings between subject leaders and tutors ensure swift identification of any underperformance, allowing for timely, tailored intervention and support.

Beyond the Classroom

In addition to their A Level subjects, students benefit from:

  • Supervised study periods to support independent learning
  • A structured Enrichment Programme, which includes:
    • Religious Education
    • Young Enterprise
    • Certificate/Diploma in Financial Services
    • Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which builds research and analytical skills
    • A compulsory Games programme, offering a wide range of physical activities

A Level Subjects Offered

Our Sixth Form offers a wide choice of A Level subjects, from the sciences, maths and humanities to languages, arts and social sciences. Whether students are aiming for university, apprenticeships or the world of work, our curriculum allows them to build a programme that suits their strengths and ambitions. All subjects are taught by specialists in small classes, ensuring expert guidance and individual support throughout.

New for 2025: Additional Assessment Qualifications (AAQ)

From September 2025, we are excited to offer an alternative academic pathway alongside A Levels: the Additional Assessment Qualifications (AAQ) in Business and Sports.

Developed by Cambridge, AAQs are modular, coursework-rich qualifications equivalent to A Levels. They provide:

  • A flexible, skills-based approach to learning
  • Enhanced opportunities for real-world experience through work placements
  • A strong foundation for both university and employment pathways
