Celebrating Diversity – Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion
At St Columba’s College, we take great pride in continually adapting and growing to provide the best possible sanctuary for our students. A key part of this mission is fostering an inclusive community that celebrates the diverse roots and identities that make up our Columban family. Through the efforts of our EDI (Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion) working group and the active engagement of our student body, we strive to build a community united in its commitment to inclusion.
Active Projects
Our Religious Education department plays a vital role in this mission by delivering a curriculum that not only broadens students’ understanding of world religions but also addresses contemporary EDI issues. These lessons encourage our young people to explore and engage with the challenges they face in an ever-changing society. In addition, our twice-weekly Pastoral Periods provide dedicated time to discuss pressing topics, ensuring students are supported in developing both empathy and awareness.
The Student Voice group also plays a key role in shaping our inclusive culture. By actively seeking and responding to feedback from across the student body, we ensure that every voice is heard. This approach helps us to create a community where everyone feels valued and included, reinforcing the sanctuary we work hard to provide.
“It’s hard to keep an open mind if you don’t have an open heart.”
– Adam Grant
EDI is sometimes seen as an “extra” initiative—a buzzword or checkbox exercise that gets lost in training videos or overlooked entirely. In reality, it’s far more than that. EDI is an ever-evolving practice because people themselves are ever-evolving. Every one of our students and staff members brings something unique to our community: a combination of skills, viewpoints, beliefs, and life experiences. These individual differences enrich our shared culture and embody the values that make St Columba’s so special.
In 2022, we launched the EDI working group at the College, led by representatives from the Senior, Prep , and College Leadership. This group is dedicated to identifying the areas where we are succeeding in fostering inclusivity and to exploring ways we can do even better. By continuously reflecting on and improving our practices, we ensure that every member of our community feels that they belong.
“We are greater than, and greater for, the sum of us.”
– Heather McGhee, The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together
As we move forward, we want to share the progress we’re making and celebrate the projects that enrich our College. Our aim is to shine a light on the important work already underway and to provide regular updates on our initiatives.
