Flame 2017

Senior School

On Saturday 11th March, 10,000 young Catholics from all over the United Kingdom came together in a huge show of faith. A delegation of students and staff joined the confirmation candidates from St Alban and Stephen Church to travel together to Wembley Arena. The day was filled with prayerful worship, inspiring speeches and concluded with a Eucharistic Adoration. The theme for Flame 2017 was ‘10,000 reasons’ which is the title of a song by Grammy award-winner Matt Redmond, who led the music for the day. This theme encourages young people of the church to see the unique gifts of every person, and for us all to leave the arena with renewed faith and fresh ‘reasons’ to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to the world.

In my opinion, the highlight of the day was listening to Cardinal Charles Bo’s speech which was both humorous and meaningful. It included facts about his fascinating career as the Catholic Archbishop of Yangon, Myanmar. He was made a Cardinal by Pope Francis on 4 January 2015 and is an advocate for the poor and uneducated in his home country of 800,000 Catholics. On behalf of all the students who participated, we would like to thank Ms McCarthy for organising this fantastic and unique retreat.
