Welcome from the Heads of Prep, 4-11, Independent HMC school for boys
Leadership and management are excellent and enable the pupils' excellent achievement and personal development. ISI Report, January 2015
We welcome you most warmly to the Prep School, a unique and happy place to learn. We are proud of our reputation for high academic achievement with first-rate pastoral care.
With the Columban virtues of Courage, Courtesy and Compassion permeating all that we do, we aim to launch boys on their individual journeys to becoming well-rounded, socially aware young men who are equipped and confident for twenty-first century society.
We know and respect the unique spirit of each of our boys, providing opportunities for them to use their special gifts and talents through both our rigorous and exciting curriculum and the fun and challenge of our extra-curricular enirchment programme.
As you explore our website, we hope you will be inspired by a sense of what makes our school so special. We extend a warm invitation for you to visit us on a working day: come and meet our wonderful boys, chat to members of our friendly parent body, tell our caring staff all about your son and how we can give him the best possible start. We look forward to meeting you.
Mr Kevin Boland and Mr Marcos Ioannou
Heads of Prep
Mr Kevin Boland, BA
Mr Boland is immersed in the spirit of St Columba’s, having taught here since 2007. After qualifying with a Degree from St Mary’s University, Kevin served as Senior School Form Tutor and taught PE from Prep to Sixth Form. Always pursuing his vocation to specialize in the Pastoral care of students, he was appointed Deputy Head of Joseph House then Head of McClancy House, a role he filled successfully for five years. Mr Boland is part of the Coindre Leadership Programme and has mentored numerous new teachers.
Since 2016, Mr Boland has been Pastoral Deputy of the Prep School. Through a Tutor programme promoting the Three Cs; Courage, Courtesy and Compassion, and the Growth Mindset, he has established a strong sense of self-discipline and personal responsibility in the boys, drawing on his specialist knowledge of Mental Wellbeing and Child Protection. He oversees a fair but firm system of consistent discipline while rewarding positive behaviour and involving the whole community in celebrating and promoting the ideal of a good Columban. Mr Boland has set up a programme of counselling and personal growth opportunities for boys within the Prep and he brings his own faith and family values to bear upon his role in the Prep Liturgy Team.
Mr Marcos Ioannou, BEd
Mr Ioannou brings a wealth of experience to his role as Joint Head, having worked in education since 1993. He has had various teaching and leadership roles in both Independent Catholic and Maintained Schools and is qualified in a range of specialisms including Dyslexia and Information Technology, in addition to his Honours Degree and Teaching Qualification.
At St Columba’s, Mr Ioannou has served as both Pastoral and Academic Deputy Head, establishing a strong and caring Pastoral structure and pursuing his mission to maintain ever-higher academic standards. He has developed a rigorous approach to assessment and reporting within the Prep and also worked to refine our Learning Support as the Prep SENCO.
